It was a beautiful day for racing at Willow Springs International Raceway this past Saturday. The fans and racers all had a great time and point’s chases were tight going into race #5. It was a tad on the hot side, so some of our racers thought it would be fun to cool off some of the fans to the tune of 55 gallons of water at a time!

The Bombers started off the night with the #79 car of Joseph Pablo on the pole, followed by the #184 of Chris Thomsen on the outside.  Chris did not take long to pass Joseph in the first lap. Then the #28 of Shelby Oatley maintained her 3rd position spot for a few laps until she had some handling problems and spun out. Shelby had her hands full with a new set up on the car that fought her all night long, but she was a trooper and kept it in the race for all 20 laps, toughing it out to the very end. The hot #18 car of PJ Hernandez took over first position and he never looked back leading 17 out of 20 laps for the checkered flag.  Brandon Fisk hung on for the 2nd place finish followed by the #184, #79, and #28.

The Mini stocks were just that this past Saturday with only 3 cars in the field, but those guys were all fighting hard to get points and catch the #33 of Jim Holland who is the current points leader.  The 1976 Red, White, and Blue Pinto of Rich Connors #76 had been rebuilt for this race, and Rich was out to prove a point. He fought hard all night and at times did close the gap between himself and the #33. But when the checkered flag fell, he ended in second place, followed by #00, Double Nuts, Steve Patterson.

The Street Stocks were up next. Missing was one of the fan and drivers favorite racers, #17 of Bobby Dezarov, who was racing for the Championship at Irwindale Speedway also.  So this was their chance to catch him in the championship points race here at Willow Springs.  This night also saw the return of Rookie Kris Gardner in the #23, and returning racer Jefro Blalock in the #31 owned by George Brodd. The #13 of Tom Wilson also returned after a few races off.  P.J. Hernadez of the Bomber division joined in at the back of the pack to see what he and his car could give these guys, he is livin’ his dream.  Lots of hard racing in this one with a big wreck in turn 3 between Jefro Blalock and Tom Wilson. Unfortunately for Tom, the hit into the gate and wall was so hard his night was “totally” over. It was tricky maneuvering to get his car loaded up, but the Angels Touch Towing pro’s expertly helped the team lower it directly onto his trailer. This wreck also took out the #31 of Blalock for the remainder of this main event.  The #38 of Dylan Buxton proved too fast to catch for #1 Will Cottrell who finished in 2nd behind Dylan.  The Rookie #23 of Kris Gardner finished third in his first top 3 ever, followed by PJ Hernandez.

Next up was the Hobby Stock Division. Don Oatley #84 started in the back of the pack this Saturday Night, but finished first again, which is why is our Points leader for this division.  This division is full of friends that have become racing families, and it is always a hard battle.  DJ Jeffrey #77 held on for quite awhile in second place until he had mechanical issues in lap 16, and was out for the night.  Johnny Troesch #44 wanted the win bad, as well as the #71 of Michael Williams, but that is how they finished, Don 1st, Johnny 2nd, and Michael 3rd.

New Late Model points leader Jered King #27 proved why he is now the leader in the division.  Jared started in last place and moved to the front by lap 3, and held the lead for the rest of the 30 lap race.  Chris Peedan #98 was not backing off though as he fought hard the entire race, and at times was right on King’s bumper trying to find a way by, but that was all he could do finishing 2nd behind Jered. Finishing third was the #05 of Randy Wilkins, and the #6 of Jim Holtz finishing his night in lap 19.

Our special guest racers were the Southwest Tour Trucks running a 40 lap Main Event. The pole position went the #11 of James West, with #21 of Dan Coburn on the outside. But the night was cruel to him when mechanical issues took him out in only lap 2.  The #4 of Ed Cutler took the lead from 3rd position in the first lap and held it all the way for 39 laps.  The 83 truck of Mike Gilboy also left the race early in lap 8.  Ron Davis in his #78 held on to 2nd for most of the race and that is how he finished the night, in second. Point leader Neil Conrad #87 brought home a 5th place finish when he had to go to the center of the track due to mechanical difficulties in lap 31.  The #99 truck of Shawn Rizzone finished the night in 3rd spot, followed by #11, #87, #9 of Alan Rizzone, #83, and #21.

That was not the end of the fun for this Saturday night under the Lights.  We still had a grudge to settle between Don Oatley and Michael Williams.  A 10 lap go for the gusto and bragging rights started off with Michael taking the lead, but followed by several spins for each driver all over the track. They were givin it their all, and then they both spun out in the last lap in turn 4. They then proceeded to get out of their cars and approach the finish line on foot, Michael ran and ran until he could no more, and collapsed at the line. Don was still in his car having trouble getting out. Meanwhile Lauren Mertz (trophy queen) was heckling her uncle to cross the line. By the time Don got to the finish line, Michael crossed it, and with that, took the bragging rights home with him. Both cars then did a full burnout to tires blown in a huge cloud of smoke. As if that was not dramatic enough, Don Oatley got into his old car, the #184 Frankenford, and did some figure 8 laps and took out 5 of the 55 gallon water barrels. He got some fans a bit wet and had some fun too. Nope that is not all. Then out on the track comes the #39 of Brandon Fisk who just could not be left out of the fun. He was maybe a little bit too excited about it because not only did he take out a barrel in a giant splash for the fans, he did lots of damage to his car hitting it head on.  No, No not done yet, Jefro Blalock wanted in on the fun too and he ran a backwards fig 8 for a lap or 2 and then he took out a couple water barrels, giving a few fans yet another bath.  Yes folks, those barrels are full and the boys love em.  Yes now, that was the end of the night.

Thanks to all of our wonderful fans for coming out and enjoying the family friendly fun at our Speedway.  All of us at G.I.R.T. ( Get Into Racing Today) try our best to make this venue kid and family friendly, and for our fans and racers too.  And we would like to thank the Huth Family of Willow Springs for all they do to help us keep this sport alive in our AV.

Our next race is Aug. 10th , we already have some fun new things planned for the next Saturday Night under the Lights on the Speedway at Willow Springs.
